Kevin McCarthy Voted Majority Leader in the House

N.Y. TIMES

Kevin McCarthy was overwhelmingly chosen by Republicans on Thursday to take over the majority leader spot that will be vacated by Representative Eric Cantor after his primary defeat this month. With McCarthy, lawmakers are likely to see a more pragmatic and inclusive leadership than Mr. Cantor preferred. Politically obsessed (Mr. McCarthy is known for lugging the 1,883-page Almanac of American Politics to read on his almost weekly flights back to California) and manically social (he cannot seem to eat dinner in Washington with fewer than eight guests), Mr. McCarthy is likely to be more focused on deal-making and elections than on pushing proscriptive policy from on high, as Mr. Cantor did.
