THE SHUTDOWN

President Trump said his proposal, announced at the White House on Saturday, was intended to “provide Congress with a path forward.” Tom Brenner for The New York Times

But even before President Trump’s announcement from the White House, some Democrats already rejected his offer as unacceptable, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) calling it a “non-starter” in part because it offered no permanent pathway to citizenship for Dreamers. She implored him to take action to open the government.

The Federal shutdown hinges on whether the United States should fund a large wall on its border with Mexico. While Trump has described the wall’s progress, not a single mile of an extended wall has been built so far.
