Trump Offers Deportation Protections in Exchange for Wall Funding

• President Trump, in an address from the White House, said that he would extend deportation protections for undocumented immigrants in exchange for $5.7 billion in funding for a border wall.
• In casting the proposal as a compromise, Mr. Trump sought to shift pressure to Democrats to end the government shutdown.

But even before President Trump’s announcement from the White House, some Democrats already rejected his offer as unacceptable, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) calling it a “non-starter” in part because it offered no permanent pathway to citizenship for Dreamers. She implored him to take action to open the government.

The Federal shutdown hinges on whether the United States should fund a large wall on its border with Mexico. While Trump has described the wall’s progress, not a single mile of an extended wall has been built so far.
