Marching orders delivered by White House aide Stephen Miller sparked the Los Angeles migrant crackdown. With Trump’s deportation numbers falling short of Joe Biden’s, Miller told top ICE officials that agents needed to “just go out there and arrest illegal aliens.” The sometimes violent protests that then unfolded in Los Angeles have handed Trump the ingredients to again burnish his tough-on-crime message. Monday’s move to send in the Marines to Los Angeles, to protect federal buildings and personnel, marked the first time in more than three decades that the U.S. has sent Marines into an American city to address civil unrest.
